Many times, money becomes a major concern for families who find it difficult to avail extra tuition and coaching for their children due to additional household expenses. This also leads to situations wherein academically sound students give up required coaching for various entrance exams. Hence, Super 50 acts as a relief for many such families. In fact, more families in India would benefit if there were more of such initiatives, promoted and brought up by their respective state governments.
Jammu and Kashmir’s education department (DSEK) initiated this program as Super -50 Free Winter Tutorial. The program aimed at providing free tuitions and coaching to all medical and engineering aspirants for various state-level and national-level competitive examinations such as JKCET, NEET, AIIMS and IIT JEE. Students who have cleared 9, 11 and 12 standard can apply for the same. However, they need to qualify a screening test prior to beginning the coaching.
Special Winter Camps were also promoted where extracurricular activities were promoted among the students. The initiative began at 300 schools in Srinagar, Kashmir with Government High School, Hyderpora being the first school to practice it. This later was extended to various other schools in different districts of Kashmir.
According to statistics, more than one lakh students and 1,000 entrance exam aspirants benefitted from the free tuitions and subsidized coaching in the first year at a nominal fee of INR 150 per month.
Classes were conducted during the three-month-long winter break and thus was availed by students who were mostly free during this break. The faculty included teachers from various government schools in and around Jammu and Kashmir.
Benefits of Super 50
Apart from coaching, students were able to avail the benefits of career counselling sessions, guest lectures, wifi enabled classrooms and mock test practices. The program gained so much popularity that presently, it runs all year round. Students are further provided with free study material to improve their skills and academic performance.
The faculty base for the programs included experienced faculty and other teaching personnel from medical and engineering professions and IIT institutes along with retired and regular staff from government schools.
Present Status of Super 50
To understand the success of any educational program, regular monitoring and evaluation is needed. Likewise, Super 50 was also reviewed by the education department and successive governments. One such review in 2016 found that more than 20 students who availed this coaching, had qualified for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) that year.
In another review, it was found that the pass percentages of many class 10 and class 12 students in government schools, improved drastically. In fact, the overall pass percentage increased from 50% to 74%. Yet again in another review by the DSEK, instructions were given to fill up the vacant seats in various coaching centres, by inculcating those students who missed out being selected earlier and whose names were in the merit lists prepared after the initial screening tests.
In December 2017, more than 5,000 students from Kashmir appeared for the next batch of coaching for entrance exams. The coaching classes were mainly for competitive entrance exams such as JEE Main, NEET and AIIMS. In the end, 1,300 plus students were selected for the same.
Another extension of the initiative is coaching for Civil Service examinations. Top 50 students were selected for free coaching for the same based on a screening test. Students will also be provided with free study material. The first batch of this civil services coaching has already begun.
